Efforts to improve water security, water-use efficiency and climate resilience in the Cuvelai and Kunene transboundary river basins have been strengthened through a Water Demand Management (WDM) Short Training Course conducted online for water professionals in Angola and Namibia. The training focused on enhancing technical capacity for sustainable water resources management and promoting more efficient approaches to managing increasing water demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training was conducted under the UNDP-GEF Project \u201cEnhanced Water Security and Community Resilience in the Adjacent Cuvelai and Kunene Transboundary River Basins (CUVKUN). <\/strong>The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the GEF implementing agency. The Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) is the executing agency, while the Cuvelai Watercourse Commission (CUVECOM) and the Kunene Permanent Joint Technical Committee (PJTC) are the focal custodians of the project that is being implemented in Angola and Namibia. The training was organized by GWPSA through the CUVKUN Project, in partnership with WaterNet Trust and CUVECOM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first online training session was held from 18-21 May 2026 for Namibia, followed by the training for Angola from 8-11 June 2026. The courses brought together professionals from government institutions, water utilities, basin management organizations, local authorities, academia and postgraduate students, strengthening regional cooperation and knowledge exchange on sustainable water management. The virtual trainings attracted 75 participants in Namibia and 64 participants in Angola. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe training enhanced my understanding of Water Demand Management and provided practical knowledge applicable to my work. I commend the CUVKUN Project and encourage continued capacity-building initiatives for water professionals across the region,\u201d said Evangelista Kamati, Technical Area Administrator, Cunene Water and Sanitation Company, Angola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this applied approach, participants developed skills in estimating water demand, analyzing water consumption patterns, assessing water losses and applying demand management measures to support informed decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme covered water demand forecasting, water balance development, NRW assessment, leak detection and water conservation strategies. Practical exercises and group discussions enabled participants to link theoretical concepts with real-world water management challenges and institutional needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the training, participants were able to apply water demand management approaches, conduct basic water demand assessments, identify efficiency improvement opportunities and support decision-making towards more sustainable water use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across both trainings, participants strengthened their capacity to apply WDM principles in water resource management. Key outcomes included improved understanding of water demand forecasting, enhanced knowledge of water loss reduction measures, improved planning approaches and stronger collaboration among water institutions across the transboundary basin. These outcomes contribute to sustainable water management, improved water service delivery and increased resilience to growing water demand and climate variability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The knowledge gained through these trainings is expected to support practical applications such as improved water allocation planning, reduction of Non-Revenue Water, promotion of water conservation measures and more efficient management of limited water resources. Ultimately, these efforts benefit communities where reliable water supplies are essential for livelihoods, agriculture and socio-economic development.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
