Projects Partner to Co-develop the Cuvelai-Basin Early Warning Information System

The CUVKUN Project and the Co-Design of Hydrometeorological Information System for Sustainable Water Resource Management in Southern Africa (Co-HYDIM-SA) Project, recently convened a two-day consultative workshop in Oshakati, Namibia from 30 September-01 October 2025 to collaborate on the co-design and co-development of an integrated Cuvelai-Basin Early Warning Information System (CUVEWIS).
The CUVEWIS will optimise data collection, sharing, analysis, early warning, and decision-support capabilities across the Basin, ensuring sustainability, resilience and stronger basin-wide water management. The CUVEWIS will provide flood and drought alerts based on rainfall forecasts and real-time hydrometric data, enabling both upstream and downstream stakeholders to respond to flood and drought threats in a timely and coordinated manner.

During the workshop, consultations were made on the system prototype and participants exchanged more ideas on the CUVEWIS design, products, data, user experience and needs. There was also an opportunity to discuss the integration of lessons from other River Basin Organisations such as the Limpopo Watercourse Commission (LIMCOM) and the participants developed a roadmap for 2026. The workshop was attended by participants from key institutions from both Angola and Namibia.
